For decades the Atlantic was protected from offshore oil drilling. Unfortunately, our federal government allowed a ban on drilling to expire. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is planning to open up the Atlantic to new oil drilling in its next five-year drilling plan; its draft EIS for offshore drilling will be released in the spring of 2016.
Seismic surveys alone will lead to injuries and death of hundreds of thousands of marine animals in the Atlantic, destroying our ocean economy (tourism, recreation, commercial fishing). Seismic surveys use “air-guns’ to emit high-decibel explosive impulses in order to map the seafloor for offshore drilling.
Instead of advocating for transient and destructive ways to address America’s energy needs, federal legislation and policies should actively support an industry and economy-wide transition to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and conservation.
